Skookum Marine, the builder associated with the Skookum 53' custom and other Skookum sailboats, has a legacy rooted in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The company was originally founded in Seattle, Washington, then relocated to Port Townsend in 1968. Skookum Marine became well-known during the 1970s and 1980s for producing robust fiberglass cruising sailboats, with the Skookum 53' being among the most notable and sought-after models for extended offshore voyaging. The Skookum range was designed for long-distance cruising and liveaboard comfort—a reflection of the prevailing Pacific Northwest sailing ethos of the time. These yachts were built using heavy fiberglass layups, offering excellent durability and a reputation for seaworthiness. Skookum Marine focused primarily on custom and semi-custom sailing yachts, particularly cutter-rigged and pilothouse models such as the Skookum 47, 53, and 58. The company's move to Port Townsend helped establish the region as a center for high-quality marine production and artisan yacht building, marking a key milestone in the area's maritime history. While Skookum yachts remain respected and are still found cruising worldwide, the original Skookum Marine company is no longer active and is regarded as defunct. Many of the vessels they produced, including various 53' custom builds, continue to be prized on the brokerage and classic yacht markets due to their provenance, rugged construction, and reputation for safe, comfortable passagemaking.
