Elvstrøm Sails is a renowned Danish sailmaker, not a yacht or shipbuilder, founded by legendary sailor Paul Elvstrøm in 1954. The company began as 'Elvstrøm Dinghy Sails' in the basement of Elvstrøm's family home in Hellerup, just north of Copenhagen. Elvstrøm leveraged his Olympic sailing success to develop competitive dinghy sails and introduced innovations such as the self-bailer and advanced floating vests that revolutionized dinghy racing. In the 1960s, the company grew rapidly, moving to larger premises in Rungsted Havn and Kokkedal before eventually relocating its main factory to Aabenraa, Denmark, where it remains today. Elvstrøm Sails is globally recognized for its high-performance cruising and racing sails, supplying both individual sailors and prestigious yacht builders like Bénéteau, Jeanneau, and Hallberg-Rassy. The brand is best known for its technologically advanced sail production rather than yacht construction. Elvstrøm Sails celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2024, at which time it employed over 300 people across Europe. A significant company milestone was the 2002 acquisition of American sailmaker Sobstad, strengthening its global reach. Elvstrøm Sails is still active, respected for its innovation, extensive OEM collaborations, and consistent focus on product development. Although Paul Elvstrøm sold his majority stake in the company in 1976, he continued to influence its design culture for many years. The company is widely regarded as a leader and innovator within the international sailmaking industry, with a legacy intimately tied to the advancements and reputation of modern yacht cruising and racing.
