Taiwan is globally recognized as a hub for high-quality yacht production, ranking as Asia's largest yacht-manufacturing nation and a leader in export volume for superyachts over 24 meters in length. Since the 1960s, Taiwan's yacht-building industry has flourished, with a concentration of renowned shipyards in Kaohsiung, Tainan, and other coastal cities. Iconic Taiwanese yacht builders include Horizon Yachts (founded in 1987), Ta Shing Yacht Building (established under this name in 1978, with origins dating to 1957 as Shing Sheng), and Johnson Yachts (since 1987). Ta Shing, for example, has delivered over 1,200 custom-made yachts and is well-known for brands such as Taswell, Tashiba, Orion, and OEM production for Mason, Baba, Panda, Nordhavn, and others. Taiwanese shipyards predominantly specialize in luxury motor yachts, long-range trawlers, superyachts, bluewater sailing yachts, and, more recently, power catamarans. The region has pioneered innovative construction methods, such as the first fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) fishing boats in Asia, and has maintained a reputation for combining quality craftsmanship with competitive pricing. Notable achievements by Taiwanese builders include Horizon Yachts being awarded 'Best Asian Yacht Builder' in 2019 and being one of the world's top five manufacturers of mega-yachts by export volume as of 2008. The industry remains robust and active, continually delivering yachts for global markets and earning accolades for high build quality, reliability, and in-house design expertise. Taiwanese yacht builders are cited by marine industry publications and international brokers for their value, craftsmanship, and successful long-term partnerships with leading naval architects. Today, many yards also offer full-service refit and after-sales centers, ensuring ongoing support for their global clientele.
