Mao Ta Shipyard, officially known as Mao Ta Lumber and Yacht Corporation, is a Taiwan-based yacht builder established in 1978 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was founded by Willie Ma, who previously worked at Union Shipyards and started his own yard after commissioning hull and keel design modifications from noted designer Robert Perry. Mao Ta's early notable achievement was producing sailboats based on the Hans Christian 34 and its subsequent modifications, such as the Hans Christian 36 and Union 36. The most famous vessels associated with Mao Ta are the Oceanic 36 and the Mariner Polaris 36, which incorporated Perry's hull forms and later modifications, including the so-called 'Brewer Bite' keel by Ted Brewer. Mao Ta specialized in crafting bluewater cruising sailboats, with hand-laid solid fiberglass hulls, robust offshore features, and interiors often finished in teak or cherry. Notable models include the Mao Ta Oceanic 36 and Mao Ta 42 Pilothouse, both respected among offshore cruising enthusiasts for their construction quality and seaworthiness. Throughout its operation, the company focused on building robust fiberglass sailboats rather than motor yachts or superyachts, contributing to Taiwan's reputation as an exporter of reliable offshore cruising vessels. Mao Ta Shipyard is listed as active as of the latest marine databases, with production centered in Kaohsiung. The company is best known for its durable bluewater yachts, modest yet respected contribution to Taiwan’s yacht-building legacy, and association with the influential designs of Robert Perry and Ted Brewer.
